Our Story

Deanston Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Deanston isn’t your average whisky — we’re proudly cut from a different tartan. Rooted in a place with rich history and real character, our story begins in 1785, when the building first opened as a cotton mill. For nearly 200 years, it powered a thriving community — until the mill closed in 1965.

That could’ve been the end, but whisky pioneer Brodie Hepburn saw something others didn’t. With soft water from the River Teith and a community built on honest work, he transformed the site into a working distillery.

Deanston opened its doors in 1966, with our first single malt bottled in 1974. Ever since, we’ve done things our own way — handcrafted, powered by nature, and shaped by tradition. What began as reinvention has become a symbol of resilience, independence, and the bold spirit of the people behind every drop.

A man in a navy sweatshirt and orange gloves handles a whisky barrel in a dimly lit, stone-walled maturation warehouse lined with stacked oak casks.

Smooth, honeyed, and waxy — three words that define Deanston’s unmistakable style. That rare waxy texture? Only a handful of distilleries in Scotland achieve it. It’s a product of place, process, and patience: soft Highland water, long fermentation, an open mash tun, and hands-on whisky making. Waxy isn’t just a flavour — it’s an experience, with richness in aroma, taste, and mouthfeel.

Our signature style runs through our non-chill filtered, naturally coloured single malts, all bottled at 46.3% ABV. Virgin Oak offers bright, zingy sweetness; Deanston 12 is creamy and fruity with a honeyed spice; and Deanston 18, aged in ex-bourbon oak, delivers depth and elegance. Limited editions, like our Organic Single Malts and experimental cask finishes, reflect our innovative and sustainable ethos.

As Scotland’s first certified organic single malt producer, we craft whisky with character — and conscience.
